“I assumed he was catching rabbits, or mice or something,” Ryan replied.
Amigo lowered his head and began to sniff determinedly at the bundle of possessions that Ryan had been using as a pillow.
“There’s no food in there,” Ryan protested but the dog continued to sniff and his feathery tail swished in excitement.
“Apparently you have something he wants,” Violet said.
The dog was now attacking the bundle with his teeth.
Ryan sprang forward to protect his possession. “Leave it alone. Get away!”
Amigo tugged at the bundle one more time and retreated triumphantly having taken possession of a cloth sack. Ryan caught hold of the sack but the dog held on and wrestled him with determination.
Violet reached out for the bag. “That’s from the boy who was in the river.”
Ryan let go of the bag. “I thought you wanted nothing to do with it.”
Violet held onto the bag while Amigo braced his feet and pulled hard. “I just want to see,” she said breathlessly. “I want to know what’s in there.”
Amigo’s eyes were wide with determination, his ears laid back, his whole body braced. Violet tugged again and the bag came apart with a loud ripping sound, setting Violet off balance and sending Amigo sliding backwards across the floor. The contents of the bag spilled out across the flagstones, some coins, a few slips of paper, a ball point pen and a crust of bread. Amigo pounced triumphantly on the bread and carried it away to a dark corner. “He’s just hungry,” Ryan said. “I guess it’s slim pickings in the kitchen.”
“I feel bad for him,” Violet agreed. “He seems to think he’s ours and we’re supposed to feed him.”
Ryan considered the boy’s little heap of treasures with a pang of longing. He looked at Violet. She was also staring down at the fragments of a civilization that could not exist here in Albion. A ballpoint pen, when would he ever see such a thing again? Was he doomed to spend the rest of his life writing with a goose feather pen and ink made from berries, and would he have to raise the goose himself, and grow the berries?
“He started out with more coins,” Violet said. “He’s been using them to buy supplies and causing all kinds of confusion. No one knew where they came from and the girl made up some sort of story.” She paused. “At least, they think she made the story up, but I’m not sure. I’m not sure about anything. If he’s the boy with the dragon emblem, she could even be the Lady of the Far Isles.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Ryan said, “but it doesn’t matter. We don’t need these things.”
“I know,” Violet replied. “I suppose someone brought them through the gate before it closed. It could even have been Mordred. He was on the other side for a long time. They could have come from him.” She reached forward. “I might be able to find out.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Ryan said. “It won’t make any difference.
